Book Review: And I Don't Want to Live this Life

Written by Deborah Spungen, this book is the story of the life of her daughter Nancy, and Nancy's love affair with rocker Sid Vicious, who ultimately allegedly killed Nancy. The book is very interesting, but it is also a painful account of what one mother had to go through and what her daughter went through as well. Whether Nancy Spungen was destined to die young, as many think, is still a matter of debate. Saying that someone is 'destined' to die young seems almost as though it is expected of them, which is not necessarily the way to look at things. Nancy's death may have been more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than anything else, but ...

was saddened by Nancy's death, but not particularly surprised. It also seems likely that Nancy's mother was in a way relieved by her daughter's death. She no longer had to suffer along with Nancy, and she no longer had to wonder when the end would come.
In the same way, though, she had promised Nancy that she would give her a good life and always protect her, and she failed her in that way. She considered hanging herself, and thought about suicide a great deal. In the end, she didn't do it. She wanted to live, and she began to realize that much of what happened to Nancy was unavoidable. She could not have protected her daughter from it, no matter how hard she tried, and at some point she must stop taking the blame for her daughter's life and death.
Through reading the book, it is easier to see some of the beauty that Nancy Spungen possessed. The media often portrayed her as nothing but a troublemaker who ultimately got what she deserved. This book, however, allows Nancy ...
