For centuries, Americans have gone west in search of what is called �The American Dream�. And still, writers try to portray the American dream in their work. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie, two Californian ranch laborers, are in search of their dream which is to own a piece of land. In JD Salinger�s novel, Catcher In The Rye, Holden Caulfield is also in search of his dream which is to be the �catcher in the rye�. Holden, George, and Lennie all have dreams and none of them ever come true.

guys in the world. They got no family. They don�t belong no place.�(Steinbeck 13) George has been saving up money to buy a piece of land for Lennie and him to live on. He finally has enough money for the land when Candy decided to join them and use his money to help pay for the land. George�s dream died when Lennie died because without Lennie, George would have too much freedom and he would spend his money carelessly instead of saving it. The death of Lennie symbolizes the death of George�s dream.
Lennie shares the same dream as George. Lennie and George travel around together working on ranches to save up for a piece of land. What Lennie really needs is a safe environment; a place where his dumbness won�t get him into trouble. �You can�t keep a job and you lose me ever� job I get����You get in trouble���You keep me in hot water all the time.�(Steinbeck 11) So, what he needs is a place where nobody will hurt him or misinterpret his actions.
