The major theme of the novel "Fahrenheit 451", is the conflict of not being able to have freedom of thought/speech, which is commonly referred to as censorship. This is portrayed throughout the novel using various different literary techniques such as symbolism, foreshadowing, and point of view. The main theme is shown throughout the novel by following the story of a firefighter breaking free of the average lifestyle when he starts reading books that he finds when burning down houses and realizes what the government is doing is wrong.

instance of this is again when Captain Beatty makes another excuse for why firefighters destroy books for the greater good. "Colored people don't like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it. Someone's written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book."(45).Here Captain Beatty tells Montag that everyone can be extremely easily offended, he uses the example of a book linking tobacco use to cancer making smokers sad and/or mad. Captain Beatty also goes on to say that destroying the book not only keeps the smokers happy but the cigarette companies too.
