Changes From The Reconstruction

The Reconstruction was the process of bringing the formally seceded southern states back into the Union after the Civil War. The Reconstruction process lasted over ten years and there were many different opinions on the best way to accomplish the measure. Many important changes resulted from Reconstruction including changes to the Constitution, the country, and in the lives of citizens.
Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 sought to free slaves all in territories still at war with the union. Lincoln managed to develop a Republican principle of opposing slavery in the federal territories. However, Lincoln's Proclamation did not completely eliminate slavery in the border ...

the radical Republicans thought he would support their Reconstruction plan, but Johnson was merely at odds with the aristocratic planters, not slavery. He set forth his own Reconstruction program and while his program seemed less lenient toward ex-Confederates than Lincoln's, Johnson appeared to be more lenient than Lincoln in practice. (440) However, when some governments did not grant blacks political rights, Johnson did not press for change and he buckled under pressure from southerners unwilling to change. In addition, he vetoed a civil rights bill that would have abolished black codes.
