Chemistry

Solution: a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances in single phase
+Solvent:component present in largest amount
+Solute:other components of the solution

-Colligative Properties: properties of a solution that depend only on the number of solute particles per solvent molecule and not on the solute's identity

14.1 Units of Concentration

-need ways of measuring solute concentrations that reflect the number of molecules or ions of solute per molecule solvent
+molarity not useful measurement for colligative properties
-3 concentration units used to reflect the number of molecules or ions of solute per solvent molecule
+Molality: m, amount of solute per kilogram of solvent; ...

14.2 The Solution Process

-Saturated Solution: if you have solid CuCl2 and you add it to water, the salt will dissolve and Cu2+ and Cl- ions will acumulate. If you keep adding CuCl2, you will reach a point where it wont be able to dissolve anymore and the solid salt will remain at the bottom
+particulate level action: the rates at which CuCl2 is dissolving and reprecipitating are equal in a saturated solution and no net change is observed macroscopically;
CuCl2(s) [forward and backward arrows] Cu2+(aq) + 2Cl- (aq)
+Solubility: the concentration of solute in equilibrium with undissolved solute in saturated solution
++ex): the solubility of CuCl2 is 70.6g in 100ml of water, if you add 100 g of CuCl2 there would be 29.4g of solid remaining

Liquids Dissolving Liquids

-Miscible: two liquids can be mixed to form a solution
+ like dissolves like; two or more polar liquids ...
