Child Obesity

When we see an overweight child, most of us think its "just baby fat. They will grow out of it when they get older". Unfortunately, chances are that the child's obesity is really no cause of her baby fat, but can be contributed to a combination of diet, genetics, and a sedentary lifestyle. This obvious epidemic has also raised great concern in the medical community because widespread childhood obesity has increased type 1 juvenile diabetes and high blood pressure in children. This concern has prompted intense investigation of the causes of childhood studies, aside from socioeconomic status, three major causes have been shown: diet, genetics or biological factors, and lifestyle.

In todays society with fast food chains around every corner, it is more convenient to "drive thru" and get a meal. Most of these meals are high in calories that are not burned throughout the day. An example would be "Taco Bell"TM who calls it the "Fourth Meal". In todays fast paced world, we tend to do what is convenient. We do not take the time to organize proper meals and consume the right foods. We tend to do what is "quick" and get it out of the way in order to accomplish the rest of our day. A lot of people today eat on the run, therefore grabbing whatever is available; the candy bars in the snack machine, the bag of chips, or the cookies. Making the right choices and shopping for the right foods takes time, money and effort.
