When I think of the words that describe the Vikings I think of barbaric and merciless. Words that describe the Christian faith like many others are peaceful and compassionate. The words I used to describe the Vikings are nowhere near accurate but it happens to be the perspective of many when the Vikings come to mind. Stephen Henkin suggested that character traits the Vikings saw in the Nordic gods are virile qualities: brutality, anger, lust, and humor. The Vikings attempted to try to shape their character from the character traits they saw their gods portraying believing that they should try to acquire these characteristics to make their gods happy. Nordic Paganism was polytheistic with the main gods being Odin, Thor and Frey.

Odin was the god of wisdom, magic and runes. The runes were the alphabet of the Vikings. Rune stones are the only documented writing from the Vikings during their existence, so a lot of the history during the Vikings existence is interpreted by artifacts and written text by monks from Europe. Odin also helped influence the Vikings going to war bravely, with the belief that Odin would be grateful if a Viking warrior died during battle.
