Death Of A Salesman: The Control Of Linda

In the play, Death of a Salesman, Linda Loman is the character that is at fault for the downfall of her two son�s, Happy and Biff, and her husband Willy. Linda is a controlling mother figure who doesn�t allow her family members to become any better than they already are. This is why she is the cause of their demise.
Linda Loman attempts to be a good mother but she doesn�t know her actions are harmful. When Willy first comes home at the beginning of the play because he wrecks the car again, Linda takes the blame off of him and blames the car. "Oh. Maybe it was the steering again. Angelo doesn�t know the Studebaker" (13). She not only blames his driving problems on the car but also ...

that if you were handsome, opportunity would come to you. Even though she knows this is wrong, she never teaches the boys right. She simply agrees with everything Willy says. Another example of this is when Biff goes to Bill Oliver for a loan. The two men haven�t seen each other in twenty years but Willy thought Oliver would give him the loan on the spot. She totally agrees with this farfetched statement and says "� isn�t that wonderful�" event though there is no chance Oliver will give him the loan (62).
During the entirety of the play, Linda hides her true self and contently agrees with Willy on most subjects. This makes it difficult to figure out her true feelings. Toward the end of the play when the two boys come home after leaving their father at the restaurant, Linda drops her false personality and shows how she really feels.
