Ecclesiastes and Role of Fate in The Iliad

Ecclesiastes, an Old Testament book believed to have been written by King Solomon, is a reflection on the apparent futility of life and man�s actions. This book begins with the repetition of everything is Meaningless; everything under the sun is meaningless. It seems hopeless, but Solomon implies that through everything that happens on the constant Earth, joy comes about with the acceptance that what is fated to happen will inevitably happen. In Book 18 of the Iliad, we see Achilles lamenting over the death of Patroklos, an event that only reaffirms the role of fate in the epic. Ecclesiastes 3 says �there is a time for everything under the heavens ... a time for war and a time for peace�. The Iliad as a whole seems to contrast with the microcosm of the shield, as it is all the Trojan War, only one particular aspect of humanity. As a result, the Iliad is more one-sided.
At the close of Ecclesiastes 3, Solomon says �As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other.
