The Electoral College is an important addition to the checks and balances of our government. The founding fathers chose to create the Electoral College to ensure the president would be truly a statesman, not a politician. When you cast your vote for president, you also vote for an elector from the Electoral College who will cast a ballot in a separate election that ultimately will choose the president. Based on the popular vote from each state will determine who the electors will choose. Every state gets electoral votes based on its population. A candidate must win a majority in the Electoral College which means that he cannot focus all his resources on only a few large states. He must try to win national appeal, as opposed to a certain region. The Electoral College preserves the two-party system that has become an important part of American politics. A successful party must present a candidate who has broad appeal nationwide. This, in turn, will unite the states and will be of benefit for the entire country. The Electoral College also protects us against uniformed voters having a huge influence.

The Electoral College makes sure that each state counts in presidential elections. It strengthens the states' role in our federalist system.
