The world has come up with many improvements from medical research such as pain medications, cures for countless diseases, and many other things that make a person feel better. Today, there is a field of study with the potential to save millions of lives but may not be recognized by many. That is embryonic stem cell research. Many people think that embryonic stem cell research should be stopped regardless of the many benefits it may bring, but the research should be expanded and be considered eligible for federal funding.

Embryonic stem cells (ESCS) are the most promising of all stem cells. They have the ability to be coaxed into any cell type and the ability to reproduce indefinitely. ESCs are isolated from human embryos, most of which are left over from in vitro fertilization. These cells could be specialized to be used either as replacement cells for those damaged by disease, or possibly for growing organs for transplant. Studies could give researchers clues into what occurs during the early stages of human development. Stem cells could also be used for testing the safety of new medications (NIH, 2006). Testing on animal cells shows that these therapies are possible.
