The Emergence of the Republican Party

The Republican Party is one of the oldest political parties in the United States, second only to the Democratic Party. However, what most people do not know is how this party came to be. In August of 1854 the Republican, or "Grand Old Party", was formed in Jackson, Michigan by the remnants of several other Northern political parties. The Republicans emerged as a political party because of the issue of slavery, geographic or sectional tensions between the North and South, and the rapid industrialization of the North.

The Republican Party was also moderate enough on the issue of slavery to appeal to more than just abolitionists. They understood that slavery was an essential element of the South's economy and to the textile industry alike. Their temperate position on slavery would allow the party to appeal to both sides of the slave debate. The differing opinions on slavery also led to tensions between various sections of the country.

The sectional tensions that developed between the North and South helped to form the Republican Party.
