Globalization describes the process of extending the horizon of human connection and exchange to the planet as a whole. It encourages us to think beyond boundaries, breaking down barriers confining and constraining various human practices. Globalisation may be without boundaries, but it is not without rules. In practice, we find that the process is structured by the usual gradients of bias: gender, race and class.

If we see globalisation as an intensification of the industrial revolution in terms of technologies of communication, then there would seem to be a concomitant opportunity for the intensification of traditions through the alignment of practical concerns, particularly at the affective level, in bounded communities.

Globalization is a dynamic ongoing process of integration of the markets of the world, through the use of new technology. The driving idea is free market capitalism (9), but it is not limited to it. It was religion that first preached the idea of the oneness of humankind. More than 2600 years ago Zoroastrianism espoused the ideal of a single human family. And yet, as globalisation drives humankind towards some sort of interdependent world the voice and vision of religion has all but faded into oblivion. The religious vision of the unity of humankind has very little in common with the motives and goals of globalisation.
