* The official beginning of the great depression was when the stock market crashed on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929. Stock prices plummeted and with no hope of recovery panic struck.

* 13 Million people became unemployed

* In 1932 34 million people belonged to families with no regular full time wage earner

* The Great Depression brought a rapid rise in the CRIME RATE as many unemployed workers resorted to theft to put food on the table. Suicide rates rose, as did reported cases of malnutrition. Prostitution was on the rise as desperate women sought ways to pay the bills.
