Part I:

Nature and enjoyable activities heal the spirit. Nick Adams, Hemingway's alter ego (250), suffered as he did returning home to the States as a wounded World War I veteran. Nick retreating to nature seemingly finds it necessary to isolate himself from people to heal and restore himself from the memories of war that haunt him. Biologist, E. O. Wilson expresses this point well when he states that, "Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive and even spiritual satisfaction" (Pickett Martinson). Nick seems numb to the devastation that occurred in Seney. Seney has been destroyed by fire and is barren, overgrown, and charred. Nick seemed to expect the town to be there as it was previously, but only briefly ponders about the places that were there previously. His main focus is the river, having plenty of fish, vegetation and clean water. It overflowed with life. After passing by the town, he stops to rest and a grasshopper nibbles at his wool sock. He notes that the grasshopper is black in having adapting in color to whatever travesty fell upon this town which is a metaphor for having survived this ordeal. Likewise, the grasshoppers finds under a log closer to the river are brown. These grasshoppers indirectly assist with allowing Nick to capture trout and survive.
