Since the beginning of the Internet protecting children online has been a long time issue. With so many websites that have inappropriate content for children that is why the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COOPA), 1998 and the Children's Internet Protection Act, 2000 were implemented by the federal government. These laws are meant to protect the privacy and personal data of children by getting parents involved. and online services directed to children under 13 that collect, use, or disclose personal information from children" (Federal Trade Commission, n.d.) Before COPPA came into place, children's data was being sold without getting the consent of parents. The federal government thought it was necessary for them to enact a law that will protect children from having their information sold. Some of the advances in information technology that resulted of the creation of these act is that now companies are now required to request permission from parent for the use of personal or for collective information of children under the age of 13. Websites are now required to post a clear and inclusive privacy policy on their website describing their information practices for children's personal information. COPPA's implementation also allow parents to be more active on what their child is doing online and what sites they are visiting and what content it has.
