Mahatma Gandhi once said, "We must become the change we want to see in the world." Gandhi probably referred to this philosophy in the context of the role citizens played in building their country. However, the fact is that his observation can equally well be applied to the process of personal development and transformation, or the change that any individual would like to see in her or his personality and life. In fact, I recently had occasion to realize exactly this when I faced perhaps the most challenging experience in my life.

As it turned out, they were right although life in the United States army initially proved to be my trial by fire, causing a great deal of internal conflict and, indeed, a major personal crisis. The crisis that occurred was a direct outcome of the easygoing and undisciplined attitude with which I had always approached life. Overnight, I faced a situation where I had to respect and follow rules for virtually every minute of the day, or so it seemed to me! In addition, the army drove home what the saying "mind over matter" really means, as I was expected to endure field and combat training that really tested my mental and physical courage and endurance.

Now, the fact is that I had joined the army with some rather immature and romantic notions of being a macho hero. When I realized that life in the army was less about machismo and more about discipline, duty and teamwork, I was ready to turn tail and run back to the carefree existence that I had previously ...
