Journeys in The Everyday Man, Journey: the North Coast, The Estates, and Through the Tunnel

Journey is a term that implies travelling from one place to another. However, it also can be interpreted as exploring the unknown, offering new sights, experiences, cultures and perspectives. Journeys are unavoidable and at some time in our lives one will face such expeditions, whether it is positive, negative, physical, inner or spiritual. The four texts discussed explore the concept of journeys; the cartoon, `The Everyday Man', by Michael Leunig, the poem; `Journey: the North Coast', by Robert Gray, the poem `The Estates', by Robert Gray, and the short story, `Through the tunnel', by Doris Lessing. Symbolism is used in the first cell to show the security of Mr Curly's home through the bed displayed evidently in the left hand corner. Mr Curly's facial expressions and body language show a series of highs and lows with the text reinforcing this idea using adjectives to highlight both the delights and dangers throughout his day. "The journey from the dog to the desk is difficult, serious and erratic", this is a clear indication of Mr Curly's motivation and courage, by not giving up and continuing on with his daily journey. We as the responder are given a new perspective on this as we are able to see that everyday life can be monotonous and foreseeable and that everyday people are required to deliver courage and perseverance to complete the everyday journey of life.

However, the persona's journey isn't completely unremarkable and tedious as Gray's writing allows the individual to escape the mundane and expand on the beauty in nature.
