Gender ideologies are established beliefs pertaining to male and female societal roles. Thus, the population of the 17[th] century strongly followed such ideologies. These gender roles are critical to the main characters of the play and create tension in the plot. Unlike most characters, Lady Macbeth develops her own gender ideologies, which she uses to manipulate Macbeth.
