Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a five tiered theory named after its creator Mr. Abraham Maslow. Maslow is known for proposing that "we communicate to meet a range of human needs (Wood, 2007)." Maslow's basic point is that "basic needs must be satisfied before we can focus on those that are more abstract (Wood, 2007)." The needs included in Maslow's theory are as simple as air and food and as abstract as defining your own talents and potential.

The third step in the hierarchy is Belonging Needs. This means being included and having fun. To have a good social life and feel included "we want others company, acceptance and affirmation, and we want to give acceptance and affirmation to others (Wood, 2007)." The way we use communication to fulfill this need is by listening and talking with others and sharing our feelings. You might even join a group or be a part of a team. For children to grow up as healthy adults they need to feel accepted and loved while growing up. A good example of belonging needs would be when I joined the Policy Council at my daughter's school so that I can get to know some of the other parents and make friendships there.
