Mirror Of Myself


When I look at the reflection in the mirror, I see a short and not well- proportioned figure. Her hair is soft and silky, her face young yet wise. When I look at the reflection of her soul, I see strength. Sometimes she is my mentor and other times I am disheartened by her actions. I have seen her raw emotions, flailing like a wailing child.
She confided in me once that she had been struggling to overcome a daily drug habit. A sense of power emanated from her as she spoke and I knew she was determined for a new beginning. Having thought back on her history of drug use, she told me she had been an addict since the age of eleven. I questioned her motives concerning why she had such a strong ...

At that point I was beginning to feel an overwhelming sense of panic for her recovery,knowing that she has had to live life locking away the hurt,crying little child. The addiction seemed to make her realities easier to cope with, and now she recognizes the reality that the addiction had become a habit- a daily ritual, like brushing her teeth. She realized that the drugs had been her companion. They had always been there when she needed comfort. At night when she was alone, they were right by her side and whenever she became bored, enraged, depressed, agitated or lonely. The drugs encouraged her to separate from those feelings and temporarily lock them away.
