Moby Dick

Moby-Dick, written by Herman Melville, is the fascinating story of a whale hunting crew and the infamous whale they pursue, otherwise known as Moby Dick. Moby Dick is not merely as he is portrayed: a terrifyingly rare albino whale with a ferocious bite. The beautiful sea monster is sophisticated and interweaved with complicated symbolism. Within two chapters alone, the reader is faced with the intricate analogy as Melville uses to illustrate within Moby Dick. Melville uses the novel to describe fictionalized events which he encountered and to represent several different, metaphors including: God, discrimination, and unlimited power.

His description given for the whale’s rare albinism illustrates to the reader the innocence Moby Dick mantains. The novel then goes on to speak on the relation of the God to the color white. The discussion correlates the white hue to the robes and throne of judgment which upon sits God. Moby Dick's color and being of nature represents glory or damnation and God himself.

Moby Dick’s white pigmentation also plays into a second analogy. In nature camouflage is essential and without it an animal is more vulnerable than ever leaving them susceptible to harm’s way. Albinism, despite being a beautiful happenstance of nature, is dangerous to the whale or any being that possesses it.
