Narrative Archetypal Patterns

Basic storytelling patterns that are found in the stories of many different cultures are what we call archetypal narrative patterns. Cupid and Psyche and Ashputtle are two great examples of archetypal narratives. These two stories share many of the characteristics that are considered as archetypal narratives, yet they acknowledge them in different ways. One characteristic that they share is a strange or even supernatural guide that helps the main character, fulfill the tasks at hand. Psyche had the help of the Gods, whereas Ashputtle had the help of the little birds. Another example would be that each story had a very jealous character that acted in a very harsh and cruel way. Venus is Psyche�s jealous adversary and for Ashputtle it is her stepmother. Now what would a story be, if the main characters didn�t have tasks to complete? This is the third characteristic they share, and it is that both Psyche and Ashputtle had tasks that they had to finish. Psyche�s three tasks threaten her life. Ashputtle�s two tasks require her dedication and hard work and are also very time consuming. Every story should have a happy ending, so the fourth characteristic, that these stories share are the �joyful� endings, whether it be rewarding the good or punishing the bad.
