Everyone has read some sort of text throughout their life. The authors of these articles use their power of persuasion to portray, their point of view to their readers. Helen Tobler author of �Stack the deck against problem gambling� published in the Weekend Professional and Lyndon Rowe author of �Hard to love this neighbor� printed in The Weekend West. Both authors use the same techniques, in different ways. By using quotes from different sources, shocking statistics, the type of language used and questioning the reader. With the power of words on their sides Tobler and Rowe can carefully choose how to engage the reader and manipulate the readers into believing the story ...

to include this statement from Malone to demonstrate that Malone knows what she is talking about. Throughout the rest of Tobler�s persuasive piece, she uses Malone. With quotes from FESA, DEC and the State Government, Rowe wins the attention of the readers, engaging them and persuading them into believing his opinion. By having these quotes from a higher authority, allows the reader to feel that the reference is true.

The use of statistics throughout both articles is strong. Tobler uses statistics from 2009, to inform the readers, of how many people in Australia have a gambling problem. On top of that she then informs the reader that �one person with a gambling addiction affects five to 10 other people�. With these statistics the author has successfully shocked the reader and persuaded them into believing that Australia has gambling epidemic.
