Today sports are very different from when they first came about. For example, in 1949 there were no African Americans in the NBA. In 1944 there were no African Americans in professional football. In 1946 there were no African Americans in professional baseball. All of these sports were dominated by white athletes. Eventually African Americans were allowed to participate in the professional field of sports. Today African American players create 77% of the NBA, 64% of the WNBA, 65% of the NFL, and 15% of MLB (Lapchick and Mathews, 1999).
