The rapid rise of auto theft crimes in Charlotte, North Carolina is making the duties of auto theft investigation very strenuous work. Detective David Clayton of auto theft investigations from the Charlotte Police Department allowed me to interact with him for two consecutive days. I also interacted with the department head of Non-Emergency Police Services (NEPS). This department initiates a lot of reports for Clayton�s investigations. During this time I learned a lot of information, observed some interesting reports in the making and witnessed an interesting interview with a suspect and then the victim. The next important piece of information required is the VIN number from the vehicle, which is the vehicle identification number and/or the tag number. Without this information, the proof of owner is hard to determine. If this VIN number is not presented, the initialization of the report is incomplete. If the owner is not verified, the report will be filed as auto theft but it will not be entered in APB, DCI, neither will it be entered in NCIC terminals.
