emerges early in her childhood, and she faces undue constant pressure of being culturally feminine. Her mother expects her to become domestically skilled ready for marriage. In a childhood drama with Cheryl on nurses, Molly announces her intention to be a doctor. Cheryl, a peer, downplays her, "You can't be a doctor. Only boys can be doctors. Leroy's got to be the doctor."(Brown, 65) Cheryl insistently counters that what determines is either one is a girl or boy. She must battle the gender expectations both from men and women. The aftermath of this fight with Cheryl is her mother announcing that "she's gonna make a lady" out of her. Molly rebelliously gets disgusted by this feminine orientation. Her mother's perspective of womanliness is a ritually prescribed set of actions repeated daily. She developed an abhorrence of girls' activities, feeling they were too feminine.
