The two stories Nathaniel Hawthorne has written in which salvation through suffering is presented are, The House of the Seven Gables, and �The Birth-Mark�. Salvation can be defined as the act of protecting from harm. These two pieces of writing reach this by two different points. In �The Birth-Mark� the protagonists desire to get rid of the imperfection on his wife�s face was his experiment which lead to the death of his wife. In The House of the Seven Gables, the two families have aggression amongst each other that causes the characters to interfere with one another. This is a prophecy stating that god will judge him for his sins, but if it were mean to be a curse then it would have to been seen that it was a sense of pride.
