Sonnet 71 by William Shakespeare is not one of his most known, but Mark Van Doren said it to be, �one of the perfect English poems, though it is not among the mighty ones.� Although the meaning of this poem may be deep and twisting, its form is very simple. It�s obviously a Shakespearean sonnet. It contains three quatrains and a couplet. The rhyme is alternating in form (ABABCDCDEFEFGG). As most of Shakespeare�s sonnets, Sonnet 71 is also written in iambic pentameter. As I said, the form is very generic.

This repetiveness of forgetting the poet would really make the audience feel guilty, and make the audience feel obligated to mourn, which is the poet�s true intentions in writing this particular poem.
This poem does contain some imagery reinforced by alliteration. The words, �surely sullen bell�. The sullen bell is a form of auditory imagery. It simulates bells chiming at a funeral service at a church. The bells are really the only vivid imagery used. The lines after that contain little to none. However, the vivid imagery of the bells becomes even more impactful since it stands alone in the poem.
I feel this poem wasn�t too hard to distinguish it�s meaning. It seems to be pretty straight forward in meaning, but very deep in impact. When researching this poem I discovered that it should be read with Sonnet 72. They contain the same theme. So, for more depth and analysis I would suggest reading them together.
