From the late 1800�2 to the early 1900�s, the status quo changed in many different ways. The politics of our nation took a curve ball along with our social and economical views. Businesses changed from small family, competitive ownerships to one man or family monopolizing an entire industry. However, in some people�s eyes, the industrial and political changes took place much more rapidly than social transformations. These gradually became what they are today, making the alterations from slavery and racist or sexist views spread out over time, so every little victory became much more sweeter.

with ship-building, rails, steel mills and factories, with a rate of growth that began to attract laborers from around the world. This industrial miracle created huge fortunes, and the relatively equal wealth of the early 1800�s gave way to the fabulous wealth of the Rockefellers, Carnegies, and Vanderbilts. It fueled massive immigration, and changed the demography of the country from a predominately English to a mixed population, that changed the culture and values of the country.

At the same time, most people who had �arrived� economically attempted to maintain the status quo by looking back to the social forms of earlier times. People imitated the plantation life in the South, or the great houses on the Hudson in the North, and wealthy people imitated the manners of Europe, if they could.
