�All Quite on the Western Front� is a novel about World War I and how it stole the innocence of the soldiers involved in the war. The main character in this novel is Paul. At the start of the war he is a nineteen year old teenager with no grasp of war. By the last chapter he has sawn more then any man should ever have to see in two life time. Paul is just a young man when he gets drafted in to the war and get sent to the fron line of the war. He thinks of it more as an adventure than. He does not realize what horros lie in store for him on the battle lines of the war .

filled with terror and groaning." It is very loud, also, with constant bombardments and frequent attacks. "At that moment," Paul says, "it breaks out behind us, shells, roars, thunders." The screamhs of injured people is even worse then the blaring explosions and the earsplitting sound of machine gun firing because they know that the wounded soldiers could have easily been them. He says, "This appalling noise, these groans and screams penetrate, they penetrate everywhere."
The effects this place has on Paul and his fellow soldiers are devastating and it is changing them every day. Paul used to find comforts in his books, but when he was on leave, he found they didn't give the feelings of excitement they use to bring him. He felt like a stranger around his family and the people he knew before the war. In one part of the book, where they are talking about what they will do after the war is over, Haie says, "If I were a non-com, I'd stay with the Prussians and serve out my time." ...
