1. Alan Strang embraces a horse called "Nugget". Martin Dysart, a psychiatrist, describes what he sees Alan and Nugget doing. Alan and Nugget disappear and Dysart addresses the audience, telling them about him and that he's partly feeling being a horse. Then he commences to tell a story.
2. Dysart is working on his desk, when Hesther, a magistrate, enters and asks Dysart to take Alan as a patient, because she doesn't want to be send to prison. Dysart accepts Alan, even though he can't cope with the number of patients he already has.
3. Alan arrives and Dysart tries to question him, but Alan does not answer, he starts singing advertisement songs instead. Dysart realizes that he isn't going ...

because they see his green face and then Dysart wakes up again.
6. Hesther visits Dysart again. They talk about Alan and that he began to talk to Dysart after two days. Dysart mentions that Alan has nightmares in which he screams out the word "Ek". Dysart tells Hesther that Frank (Allan's father) did not allow Allan to watch TV. Allan told Dysart that his mom (Dora) wasn't as strict as Frank and that she is a schoolteacher. Dysart plans on visiting Alan's family to find out more about Alan's background.
7. Dysart visits to Strang family. He talks separately to Frank and Dora. He finds out that Alan likes horses, but never rode on one. Frank tells him that he think the boy has gone crazy, because Dora read the bible to him.
8. Alan has a nightmare and cries out the word "Ek" all the time. Dysart wakes him up.
9. Dysart and Alan have a conversation. Dysart tries to find out about Alan's nightmare and the word "Ek". Alan doesn't answer and instead questions Dysart. Because Alan starts ...
