�The Revolution was effected before the war commenced, it was in the minds and hearts of the people.� (Medvedev 1). There were many reasons that the colonists became so impassioned for their independence. Although these reasons were mostly rooted in economic issues, the war was fought over both economic reasons as well as political repression. The major issues leading to the war, however, were economic ones. During salutary neglect, the colonies basically had the freedom to govern themselves. This allowed them to develop their own economic system, and establish a trade system beneficial to the colonies. British Empire was erected on the then-popular theory of mercantilism, which held that colonies existed for the benefit of the mother country.� (Bailey 92) The Mercantile system was certainly not a new idea, it was already used by French and Spanish as a way of profiting more from their colonies. The Mercantile system was a way of ensuring that England exported more than it imported. The colonies would supply the raw materials and to England, which would turn them in to finished goods, and export them. The colonies would also furnish products needed by the British, and buy British goods instead of those from other countries.
Most of the time, the British goods were cheaper than their foreign counterparts, but the colonies were not able to run their trade where it would be most beneficial to the colonies.
