The Civil War

Manifest Destiny supplied America with new territories such as Texas, Mexico, California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Oregon. When these territories were added, slavery along with state and territorial rights became prominent issues. Disputes over who was a territory and who was a state, and who could have slavery and who could not, were the central themes of many conflicts and compromises that fueled anger between the North and the South. would bring an end to slavery. One of the earliest instances of the South believing this was Lincoln�s �House Divided� Speech of 1858. Here he warned that the nation would end up being either entirely free or entirely accepting of slavery. If Lincoln were to become president, the South would undoubtedly secede. Stephen Hale, who had been appointed by the governor of Alabama to travel to other slave states to advocate secession, discussed the impact of Lincoln's election. Hale said:
