The Color Of Water

The Color of Water by James McBride was a novel on his autobiography of his mothers life and his as well. There was a lot of emotions going on through the novel. Throughout the novel, James was trying to identify his life and origin. James mother, Ruth, wouldn�t admit that she was white and James felt like he didn�t look like his mother. He never met his father because his father passed away of lung cancer before James was born. At one point James had no idea where he came from and his mother only told him that he had come from God. So, James had to follow his mother�s history so he can identify who he is.

James was insecure of who he was and his families experiences. Whenever he asked his mother if he was black or white she snapped saying �You�re are human being.� �Educate yourself or you�ll be a nobody!� So that�s just what James did. As he grew older he convinced his mother to tell him about her life. Then he went to his mothers hometown and interviewed old friends of Ruth and asked them about his mothers life. Most importantly he interviewed his mother and was able to talk to her about her past. So he finally was able to know where he came from and about his family after all the years of wonder.

I believe that if Ruth, James mother would have had a personal relationship with her children if she had let them know a little more about herself. Both James and Ruth had to ...
