The Democratic-Republican party was formed by secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (1791-93). It opposed centralizing policies of the federalist party run by Alexander Hamilton which was the secretary of the treasury. The party began in 1791, one faction in Congress opposed the new Constitution and they called themselves the first Republican party or Jeffersonian Republicans. First formed as an anti-administration, They had secret meetings in the National Capital of Philadelphia, to oppose Hamilton's financial programs. parties was that the Republicans were very anti-federalist. They didn't believe in anything that the federalist believed such as calling for a national bank, tariffs, and good relations with Great Britain as expressed in the Jay Treaty negotiated in 1794. The Republicans wanted a more Jacksonian perspective. What I mean when I say Jacksonian is that they knew how important slavery was and because of slavery a battle or war began because of it. The Democratic party wanted a more liberal perspective. Liberal means to be open to new behavior or opinions and willing to discard traditional values. The Republicans wanted to keep and keep the traditions. My current observation of what I read and summarized is very educational and I already am starting to change my point of view of the parties.
