Before reading the story �The Lottery� you would think someone was getting some type of reward just by looking at the title. In this story they look at what is lost and not won. The author starts out by saying it was a clear and sunny day(120). He does this to keep what is going to happen in the end a surprise. The conflict between generations regarding the importance of tradition will never be resolved. Traditions are customs or beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. Now, in today�s society all generations try to decide whether tradition should stay the same or evolve. America, people are figuring out what outfit to where or why they should even where that outfit. Some people wear what they want while others follow the tradition and wear a suit or tie or a skirt with a blouse. In �The Lottery they followed the tradition of being violent and allowing what has gone on for years to continue. The younger children could of thought it was a game or did it because everyone else around them where doing it as well. Parents and children go through this until it is time for them to make up their own decisions and maybe even start their own tradition. In �The Lottery� the town does not want to change the tradition of being stoned until Mrs. Hutchinson thinks it was unfair. The town does not think twice about it, they stone her anyway.
