The Media: Newspapers


There are two main types of newspaper: the tabloid and the broadsheet. The tabloids are easily recognised as the smaller ones whilst the larger ones are the broadsheets. We read, analysed and scrutinised one of each of the different types of newspapers in order to compare them and find their advantages, disadvantages, layout and readability.
The main difference that you can easily spot when you first pick up each of these newspapers, is the fact that the broadsheet is about twice as big as the tabloid. This doesn�t necessarily mean that the tabloid has less information and stories in it as we found out when we looked at The Daily Telegraph (broadsheet) and The Daily Mail (tabloid). When we ...

on the front page but The Telegraph also has a humorous cartoon that relates to the main story. The photos in the broadsheet are needed to draw the reader�s attention to the paper but also to make the large blocks of text seem less intimidat-ing. The newspapers also have lots of advertisements. In The Daily Telegraph they are very colourful and large, often covering one or two pages (For example,, for Volkswagen or Saab-mostly car adverts) while the advertisements in The Daily Mail seem to be smaller and mostly in black and white (For example,, caravan holidays in Wales).
I think that if a less literate person was choosing between the two they would be more likely to choose the tabloid because the large picture and small block of text makes it seem less intimidating than the broadsheet where there are several huge blocks of text. I do not think this job is as important in the tabloid as it is in the broadsheet because in tabloids the Daily Mail (which we looked at) most of the articles have just been squashed in where they fit best. There does not appear to be any set template like there is in the broadsheet.
