Throughout history Imperialism has occurred all around the world, and has been determined by many factors. that took place in the late 1800's was influenced by two main factors, the Industrial Revolution and the development of technology in the West. The vast resources of Asia and Africa, impulsed the West to take over these two continents in the struggle to exploit them as much as possible for their own wealth, with the excuse of Westernization and its Supposed benefits.

it was all done in a way that it seemed as beneficial for the colonized, as for them. Technological Advancements were very important in the development of . Inventions such as the maxim machine gun and the steamboats were key for the Europeans too reach their objectives in Asia and Africa. Steamboats were essential for the transport of goods and provisions, all the way from Europe to the colonies. Macgregor Laird states the importance of steamboats at this time, "By this invention every river is laid open to us, time and distance are shortened."(Tools of Empire, pg.17). The greatness of this invention and the possibilities it brings is fundamental for the development of the imperialism. The maxim machine gun was also very important in Western domination over Africa and Asia. It's power and capacity was essential for the Westerners to control and dominate the colonized people.
