The White Heron Literary Analysis

Wouldn't you admire somebody who cares about nature and the animals living on earth? Well in this short story of "The White Heron" by Sarah Orne Jewett, well her name is Sylvia. Sylvia is nine years old, but she shows courage and pride in what she believes is the right thing, and she stays true to who she is. "The White Heron" is about Sylvia that meets a "stranger", which the stranger in this case is a bird hunter, and is looking for the White Heron for his collection. This strange man even bribes Sylvia ten dollars if she helps him locate the White Heron, but of course Sylvia isn't like any ...

among the trunks of the trees." (Jewett P1) The introduction of the story is just astonishing, the way she uses nature to catch the readers' attention. Nature has a big part of the story line that was a clever way to put the two subjects together.
Another main aspect of the story that I liked was how Jewett didn't straight out and say that Sylvia was fond of nature but instead she gave hints to the reader. "A little girl was driving home her cow, a plodding, dilatory, provoking creature in her behavior, but a valued companion for all that." (Jewett P1) She leaves a little mystery behind Sylvia, not just giving everything about Sylvia away. This makes the reader want to keep on reading.
Sylvia is puzzling, in her actions with the stranger too. She doesn't show the "strange man" any real reactions when the man approaches her, but instead she takes him to her grandmother and lets her grandmother deal with the man.
