Examining Okonkwo, we can see how many men of the Ibo society may have mistreated their wives, verbally, mentally, and physically. Through the hateful comments, threats, putdowns, and beatings, it is not hard to see why the majority of the Ibo women are less interactive or “out there” than the Ibo men.

Even though the Ibo women were not treated equally, they were still included in the community by delegating certain positions or duties of significance. The first wife of an Ibo man is paid with a certain amount of respect. However, the second or third wives are treated with less respect, in fact, it’s quite close to none.
