I feel that attending college plays a very important role in gaining experience for the real world, acquiring knowledge beyond my career field, and growing cognitively by thinking in new ways. College is the perfect time to learning to think cognitively because although learning continues through adulthood, it becomes more laborious the older a person gets (315). In support of this idea, Perry found that first-year students tended to depend heavily on the advice of authority figures to find which ways of thinking were right and which were wrong (316). Later as seniors, the same students changed in their ways of thinking.
