The blood passing through the kidneys is filtered by nephrons, which are made up of a network of blood capillaries known as the glomerulus and the renal tube. The kidneys also play a large role in osmoregulation, which is defined as the active regulation of osmotic pressure to keep fluids from becoming overly concentrated or diluted.
The kidneys contain many structures, the renal cortex, which is the outer, granulated layer that dips down in between an inner layer called the renal medulla.
