Was Germany in a totalitarian state from 1933-1945?

In 1933 Hitler became chancellor and Germany changed greatly from a democracy to an almost totalitarian state.

Germany under Hitler was a very good example of what a totalitarian state was. People did not question decisions, no matter how absurd they appeared to be. It was evident that working against the party, or even being perceived as a potential threat would lead to prison or worse (Gestapo). The Gestapo, secret Nazi military service, was under Hitler's power and everybody had to obey Hitler, they didn't have a choice, otherwise the Gestapo would catch them.

Even social organisations like cycling clubs and the very popular hiking clubs were brought under Nazi control. One of Hitler's first acts was to replace all the Police Commissioners with Nazis, and recruit thousands of SA as police auxiliaries. Soon judges too were Nazi Party members. Nazi ideology was compulsory from Schools to Universities and only Nazi approved staff kept their jobs. Even arts, films and literature had to conform to Nazi ideas. Germany became infamous for book burning and the destruction of Modernist art.
