This essay explores the idea of white privilege. The main argument of the paper is that the implicit and often invisible force of white privilege in America functions to produce effects that are equally (if not more) troubling than overt or explicit racism. The privilege that I speak of has to do with the way that a person's identity is linked to the person's social location. If a person is a member of the ruling race of her or his society, the person is likely to regard her or his identity as "normal." If, however, the person is a member of the non-ruling race of her or his society, the person is likely to regard her or his identity as "abnormal" or "deviant" in some way. This ...

society is somewhat misleading. In this case, "ruling" is not meant to indicate that the group or individuals in question are running the society with any sort of explicitly official sanctioning. I chose to use the term "ruling" because it points to the way certain groups in a society or community tend to have dominance in the workings of the society. Any time a society functions in such a way as to grant advantageous situations, goods, or services to one group of people and not to others, a condition of "ruling" might be said to exist. The group who is placed in advantageous positions will, naturally, have more power than the other groups, and will encounter little to no resistance in meeting their goals.
