Technological advances in today's society have caused people to become "helpless." In William F. Buckley's essay "Why Don't We Complain," he discusses this reality and the consequences of a society primarily made up of "helpless" people.
Buckley describes how American's lifestyles have evolved (or de-evolved). Buckley states that in the past, we were able to solve everyday problems through our own creativeness without having to rely on machinery. He recalls that for generations, Americans who were too hot or too cold, did something about it without the assistance of a plumber, electrician, or a furnace man. problems on a calculator without the hours of straining. As I write, I am using a technological advance that I have become dependent on: the computer. If not for this piece of machinery, I would be stuck for minutes setting margins with the traditional typewriter, and looking up the spellings of various words in a dictionary! Man has made living too easy. We have only solved problems with solutions that lead to another problem. The new problem created is laziness and dependence.
The list of advances that spoil today's American is endless. So what happens when all the needs of humans are met, or when everyone is dependent on others to solve everyday inconveniences? I feel that man has, and will further de-evolve, becoming lazier and more dependent upon the advances that were created to help make life easier.
Although Buckley's argument might hold true today, his question, "why don't we complain?" would hold no value. Complaining is what causes people to become helpless ...
