of the injustices people suffer and the rights they deserve. As Martin Luther King, Jr. explained to Congress in 1966, the American civil rights movement was now demanding "more than civil rights." The struggle for "human rights" it included the right "to live in a decent house" and the right to earn or receive "an adequate income." Methods of protest, organization, litigation, and legislation had dramatically expanded black people's legal and constitutional rights. In the South it had become easier by 1966 to peacefully assemble, vote, and gain access to public accommodations such as libraries and restaurants. Mass protests had forced Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965, but King argued that these victories came with little financial cost to the nation. In my opinion if it wasn't for Dr. King's leadership we wouldn't be able to stand up for our rights. He died doing what he thought was best for this country.
