The learning perspective is what happens when the compulsion is followed. If one feels extremely uncomfortable unless one keeps cleaning and the cleaning makes the discomfort fade then the person is developing a learned process. They are teaching themselves that the cleaning is removing the discomfort and it reinforces the need to continue the ritual of constant cleaning. The biological aspect triggers the initial events and the learned perspective and reward for the behavior strengthen the need for the compulsion to be followed.

The treatment for this type behavior is often two-fold. Medications are often introduced to blunt or block the chemical imbalance that triggers the desire or belief that the person must continue to clean.
