The film that I chose to do an analysis on was �People Vs Larry Flynt�. I decided to evaluate this movie because I had never seen it and I am interested in knowing what my rights toward censorship involve.
In People Vs Larry Flynt there were numerous cases of civil liberties, which were tried. The main civil liberty issue in the film was the freedom of speech, which is contained, in the first amendment. Charles Keating brought a case against Larry Flynt claiming that Hustler magazine, which was published by Larry Flynt, was pandering obscenity. Americans want as much freedom as they are entitled to and this was Larry Flynt�s defense. Even though Flynt�s attorney proclaimed that he didn�t agree with the particular content of Flynt�s publication, he didn�t want someone else telling him what and what not he had the right to view. This point was brought about well by the attorney but still resulted in a guilty verdict for Larry Flynt, which landed him in prison. Later in the film Larry Flynt is brought into Supreme Court, this time for a case of libel. A respectable evangelist from Georgia, Reverend Jerry Falwell brings Flynt into court for unjustly defaming him in a cartoon, which depicted him having sex with his mother.
