most importantly, starts the whole novel with a quote from his father and that he cannot forget what his father had said to him, exemplifying the importance of his father in his life. Also, Nick briefly states that he is �snobbishly reapeat[ing]� his father�s words; Nick follows his father�s footsteps. Their prosperities are also perceived through the line, �...when I came back from the East last autumn...� as Nick is implying that he has the money to go abroad frequently. Fitzgerald expresses Nick�s snobbish and class-obsessed behaviour throughout the first paragraphs, with words like, �world uniform�, and �advantages� to also emphasise this.
Fitzgerald has Nick informing the reader to the point that he is remarkably educated and well-cultured. As well as being abroad and witnessing diverse customs, he states that he was �unjustly accused of being a politician� when he was �in college�.
